Yo! I am totally diggin’ the Yahoo ‘Purple’ Themed Marketing Campaign. And I think the word purple is fun to say also. It’s just a silly word, that sometimes makes me think of silly things- hence this title post. I think this ad campaignjust brings ’simple’ and a lil’ silly back to the advertising world. Not that I am an ad agency guru (although I have seen a number of people I could probably give a run for their money  ;-) ) but as random as the concept seems, it works. And I am certainly not a purple-holic or anything to that effect. I just opened up the Yahoo Browser and saw this little cartoon boy whiz across the top of the screen on a bicycle. It was difficult not to notice him. Then I saw him walk by in these gigamongous purple shoes. And I was thinking to myself what on Earth is that all about? You know I had to just click on it.

Are these the new digs in Copenhagen or is it a faux Purple Yahoo bike planted for the sake of publicity? hmmm. At any rate, hello to my dear ol’ Danish Friend Per and his lil’ bro’ Moanes :)

So I click on him and a purple screen starts loading with some purple themed trivia…indeed the build up and anticipation was killing me. But as it turns out it was just purple stuff with a short purple story yet I was pleasantly pleased.  Apparently, Yahoo Marketing came up with the idea of designing a bicycle which ultimately tied into another advertising campaign with a purple theme. So naturally they built a purple bike 2.0 – with a live video camera and a gps built-in. And I suppose that they are going to do a whole nuch of other interconnected things. Right now to me, it’s simple, it’s random as in ‘the concept’, it ties in new media and creates community. I think they are all desirable traits of a good ad campaign….but who I am say? My guess is they are going to ride around and look for human interest stuff and random things connected to the theme purple. I guess we’ll have to wait and see but so far I like how it’s starting off :)

Want to know how you can come up with a cool ad campaign that brings good energy & attention? Then follow these 3 simple tips:

1.  Make it YOUnique! Instead of retailiating against someone else’s ad or trying to one up someone else who is getting a lot of attention, be proactive and come up with something that is original, fresh and YOU! People are inspired by who you are and what you are about.

2.  By the People, For the People…It’s about providing a public service and not being a public utility….(company, lol). If you want to create and move ‘the people’ to action you to be ApProaChable, be EnligHtening and most importantly keep the INTEREST in interesting by engaging the human theme among people. It keeps you communal. If you are happening, so is everybody around you!

3. It’s so simple…that it’s complex. So instead of overconceptualizing and overplanning, just put the concept out there even if it’s in its basic form. Just make sure it is clean and professional design and clearly makes it point (has a call to action).  If you try to think of the reaction of people and all the possible outcomes then you will take forever to get it done or you will be disappointed if it is not an immediate success (which most things aren’t). So just get it done and get it out there and grow with flow.

And here’s the ad link once more if you missed it earlier in this post.
